Counoise
Counoise is a dark-skinned grape variety used primarily in the production of red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines in the Rhône Valley. It is one of the permitted grape varieties in the appellation and is valued for the freshness and lift it brings to blends. Historically, it has also been known as Moutardier, particularly in relation to its use in wines from Gigondas.
Counoise typically produces wines with bright, fruity characteristics, showing notes of wild berries, plum, and strawberry, often accompanied by subtle spice. It is most commonly used as a blending grape, where its relatively high acidity and aromatic profile help to balance richer, more structured varieties such as Grenache and Syrah.
