Montils
Montils is a lesser-known white grape variety primarily grown in south-west France, particularly in the Cognac region. It is traditionally used as one of the permitted grape varieties in the production of Cognac and other local brandies, although it plays a secondary role compared to more widely used grapes such as Ugni Blanc.
The vine produces small, round berries and is valued for its relatively reliable yields. Montils tends to have lower acidity than other distillation grapes, with a softer profile and subtle sweetness in the fruit. Because high acidity is generally preferred for distillation, Montils is often used in smaller proportions, contributing roundness and aromatic nuance rather than structure.
When vinified as a still wine, which is relatively uncommon, Montils can produce light, approachable whites with gentle fruit character. Although it remains a minor variety, it forms part of the historical fabric of the Cognac region and continues to be cultivated for its traditional role in local wine and spirit production.
