Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is a dark-skinned grape variety originating from Portugal, where it is considered one of the country’s finest and most important grapes. It is best known for its role in the production of Port, where it is typically used in blends, although it is also increasingly used for high-quality still red wines.

The grape produces deeply coloured wines with firm tannins, high acidity, and notable alcohol levels, giving it excellent ageing potential. Its aromatic profile is distinctive, often showing notes of blueberry, plum, violet, and hints of mint or herbal spice. These characteristics contribute to its structure, complexity, and intensity.

In terms of food pairing, Touriga Nacional is well suited to rich and flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled steaks, roasted goat, and other robust meats. When used in fortified styles such as Port, it also complements chocolate-based desserts, where its richness and intensity match the sweetness of the dish.
