Tasting Notes

A brick-red appearance with some light orange tinges leads into a fine slightly smokey aroma with hints of dried fruits. The palate is refreshing, with wonderful acidity and hints of dried apricots and crystallised fruit, leading to a lengthy mellow spirit driven finish.

Vinification
2008 was an excellent year in the Douro wine region, rains occurred during the spring and early part of the Summer, allowing soils to maintain good water levels until the harvest and the cooler conditions throughout the growing season coupled with a dry and relatively cool July and August led to a later harvest.

The low yields due mainly to rain during flowering, were also important to obtain quality fruit with great acidity, freshness and balanced sugar levels - perfect for the Niepoort style. The grapes were foot-trodden in lagares with 100% stems and fortified at their port production centre in Vale de Mendiz and aged in Niepoort's cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia, in old 550L barrels.

Niepoort

Niepoort ports are a Dutch family established in Portugal since the 18th Century and producing quality rather than quantity. Niepoort has been described as “the Rolls Royce of Port”.

My first experience with Niepoort goes back to 1975, when armed with courage and conviction, I met in Oporto about 10 different potential suppliers and Niepoort was my lucky choice. Rolf the father and then Dirk carried on supplying Hourlier Wines with constant high standards. This is our only non French product. Non je ne regrette rien!
