Piquepoul
Piquepoul, also known as Picpoul, is a white grape variety native to southern France, most closely associated with the village of Pinet in the Languedoc. Wines produced in this area are labelled Picpoul de Pinet AOC, one of the grape’s most recognisable expressions. The variety is well suited to the warm, Mediterranean climate, particularly in coastal areas where it benefits from cooling sea influences.
Although best known for its single-varietal wines in Picpoul de Pinet, Piquepoul is also used in blends across other regions of southern France, including the Rhône Valley and wider Languedoc. It is valued for its ability to retain high acidity even in hot climates, making it an important component in maintaining freshness and balance in wines.
In terms of style, Piquepoul typically produces light- to medium-bodied white wines with crisp acidity and a refreshing profile. Flavours often include citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit, alongside green apple and subtle saline or mineral notes. This bright, zesty character makes it an excellent match for seafood, particularly shellfish, as well as light Mediterranean dishes.
