Grand Noir de la Calmette
Grand Noir de la Calmette is a red grape variety originating from southern France, created in the 19th century by François Durif through a cross between Petit Bouschet and Aramon. (and named after his estate). It was specifically developed to produce wines with deep colour, high yields, and good adaptability to warm climates.
The grape is vigorous and productive, thriving particularly well in hot, dry regions such as the Languedoc and parts of the Iberian Peninsula, but sadly has fallen out of fashion in France today. Its resilience and consistent yields made it historically important in bulk wine production.
