Grolleau Gris
Grolleau Gris is a rare white (grey-skinned) mutation of the red Grolleau grape, traditionally found in the Loire Valley of France. While Grolleau Noir is more widely planted and historically associated with light red and rosé wines, Grolleau Gris remains far less common and is typically encountered in small, often experimental plantings. It is permitted in several Loire appellations and is most often used in blends, although some producers are beginning to explore it as a single-varietal wine.
The grape is well suited to the Loire’s temperate climate, where it retains freshness while achieving sufficient ripeness. Grolleau Gris generally produces light- to medium-bodied white wines with moderate acidity and a soft, rounded texture. Aromatically, it tends to be subtle, offering delicate notes of orchard fruits such as apple and pear, along with hints of citrus and occasional light floral or herbal nuances.
Historically overshadowed by more prominent Loire varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Melon de Bourgogne, Grolleau Gris has seen renewed interest in recent years. This is largely due to a broader movement among winemakers to revive lesser-known indigenous grapes. Today, it is valued for its ability to produce fresh, approachable wines that reflect regional character while offering something distinctive within the Loire’s diverse white wine landscape.
