Montpeyroux
Languedoc-Roussillon is often known for its inexpensive and not that well-known wine. Still, the prominent French region is home to many smaller appellations, some of which are worthy of getting to know better.
Montpeyroux is one of these gems in Languedoc, and its unique landscape has allowed winemakers to craft wine of spectacular quality. Wine that’s just gaining the recognition it deserves.
Montpeyroux is not the largest nor the most known wine appellation in Southern France, but it’s certainly up there with the most cherished. The small amounts of wine coming out of the terraced appellation are appreciated by wine lovers and connoisseurs alike.
Montpeyroux AOP
Montpeyroux is a coastal region within Languedoc-Roussillon in Southern France. The sunny appellation lies in the Montpeyroux commune within the Hérault department.
Despite the region’s proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, Montpeyroux is home to high-altitude vineyards at the foot of the Larzac Plateau. The terraced vineyards are rich in chalky and alluvial soils, and the stony terroir benefits from cooling breezes, making grape growers in the area very happy.
The vineyards here are the highest in the area, with altitudes between 140 and 280m, which means the wines retain mouth-watering acidity while displaying ripe fruit aromas. This is memorable wine on par with the best in Languedoc.
Grapes in Montpeyroux
Montpeyroux’s stony vineyards are ideal for growing red grapes, especially those that thrive in the warm Southern France.
Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are the leading varietals in Montpeyroux, and they’re blended to create balanced wines that show fruit purity and acidic balance. The region’s altitude and the northern winds that caress the vines allow for higher acidity levels, which are very much appreciated at the table. Wines made with the famous GSM blend have excellent food compatibility.
Cinsault and Carignan are also allowed in the area, and if winemakers want to make white wine, they must label it as Languedoc, not Montpeyroux.
Montpeyroux Wine to Try
Villa Dondona is a unique estate on the terraces above Montpeyroux. With 21 acres of vines, a British artist and a French doctor have made winemaking their way of life.
The couple makes this red wine with Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache. It shows a crimson colour and scents reminiscent of ripe red fruit and brown spices over a palate blessed by the most exciting peppery notes. A smooth mouthfeel and a long aftertaste make this memorable wine ideal for roasted poultry and grilled pork.
Food Pairing with Montpeyroux Wine
Wine from Montpeyroux is a superb partner at the table. Sadly, the region’s small production is never enough to satisfy the region’s fans. Montpeyroux is always fruit-forward and somewhat mineral, with earthy undertones and vibrant acidity. This makes it compatible with fatty and non-fatty red meat, roasted poultry, grilled pork and meaty stews.
Grenache-based Montpeyroux is gentle enough to be paired with oily fish like salmon and tuna. Still, Montpeyroux is often served with red and white meat, and it’s considered a high-end everyday wine with a fantastic quality-price ratio. If you’re looking for a refreshing take on Languedoc’s wines, Montpeyroux is for you.
