Pic Saint Loup
One of the trendiest appellations in Southern France; it’s a sub-region of Languedoc-Roussillon and a source of spectacular wine.
Pic Saint-Loup stands out for its stunning geography, and the area is home to some of the highest elevation vineyards in Languedoc. Here, a small but dedicated group of craft winemakers make superb wine, benefiting from the region’s Mediterranean warmth and the cooling breeze rolling down the area’s mountains. This is what you need to know about Pic Saint-Loup and its spectacular wine. This is not your ordinary wine from Southern France.
Pic Saint-Loup AOP
Pic Saint-Loup is easy to spot, even from a far, thanks to the massive Pic Saint-Loup mountain and the Montagne de L’Hortus. Both mountains overlook the region’s limestone soils, creating diverse microclimates at different altitudes.
With altitude comes lower temperatures, so Pic Saint-Loup can host a variety of wine grapes to produce diverse wines. The area covers seventeen communes producing almost 50,000 hectolitres of wine every year from only 1,300 hectares of vines. Red wine is king here, although producers also make small amounts of rosé.
Pic Saint-Loup’s wine is always well priced and of high quality; extraordinary everyday wine that can rise to special occasions.
Grapes in Pic Saint-Loup
Three grapes dominate Pic Saint-Loup’s vineyards, and they’re all red. Syrah covers the high-altitude vineyards, while the lower areas are planted with Grenache and Mourvedre.
The brilliant GSM blend that has put southern France and many other wine regions on the map shines in Pic Saint-Loup; the region’s unique terroir produces fruit-forward red wines with balancing acidity.
Red Pic Saint-Loup is one of the most graceful wines in Languedoc-Roussillon, and the rosé is chic and sophisticated. The appellation also authorises the red varietals Carignan and Cinsault, although they’re used sparingly by the region’s winemakers.
Pic Saint-Loup Wine to Try
Pic Saint-Loup: Mas de Farjou Clos des Jean de Farjou
Mas de Farjou produces only 10,000 bottles of wine every year, but they’re as traditionalist as winemakers in France get. This ruby-red wine is a combination of Syrah and Grenache. It offers the loveliest black fruit aromas with earthy undertones reminiscent of truffles and balsamic. On the palate, Mas de Farjou is structured but smooth, elegant and refreshing.
Oak spices mingle in the back palate, while pleasant alcoholic warmth keeps things together. Enjoy with red meat, mainly if grilled or roasted.
Food Pairing with Pic Saint-Loup Wine
Red Pic Saint-Loup is a rustic red wine, but its natural acidity makes it elegant. The wine’s ripe fruit aromas and tartness make it compatible with a wide range of foods.
Comfort food, including meat stews and casseroles, are delightful with a glass of Pic Saint-Loup, but the wine can also tackle heartier pairings, including grilled red meat and roasts.
Pic Saint-Loup rosé is delicious on its own, especially if served chilled — this is the perfect summer wine. The pink wine is also compatible with finger food and hearty starters, from cured meats to fresh cheese.
