Pinot Auxerrois
Pinot Auxerrois is a white grape variety closely related to Chardonnay, sharing the same parentage (Pinot and Gouais Blanc), and is therefore considered a sibling rather than a direct offspring. It is most commonly associated with Alsace, where it is often blended with Pinot Blanc, although it is also cultivated in neighbouring regions such as Germany and Luxembourg.
In Alsace, Pinot Auxerrois plays an important role in the production of Crémant d’Alsace, where it contributes body and softness to sparkling blends. While it is sometimes labelled under the broader “Pinot Blanc” designation in the region, it is a distinct variety with its own characteristics. The grape is valued for its relatively low acidity and its ability to produce approachable, well-balanced wines.
In terms of style, Pinot Auxerrois typically produces light- to medium-bodied wines with a rounded texture and subtle aromatics. Flavours often include orchard fruits such as apple and pear, with gentle floral notes and a soft, slightly creamy finish. Its moderate structure and smooth profile make it a versatile, easy-drinking wine, well suited to a range of lighter dishes.
