Poulsard
Poulsard, also known as Ploussard, is a red grape variety native to the Jura region in eastern France. It is one of the traditional grapes of the area, alongside Trousseau and Pinot Noir, and plays an important role in the region’s distinctive wine styles. Despite being classified as a red grape, Poulsard has very thin skins and low pigment, resulting in wines that are notably pale in colour.
The grape is well adapted to Jura’s cool, continental climate, where it ripens relatively early and retains good acidity. Poulsard is commonly used to produce light red wines, as well as rosé styles, and is also permitted in the production of Crémant du Jura. It is often vinified as a single-varietal wine, though it can also be blended to add freshness and delicacy.
In terms of style, Poulsard produces light-bodied wines with soft tannins and bright acidity. Aromatically, it typically shows red fruit notes such as strawberry, raspberry, and redcurrant, often accompanied by earthy, spicy, or slightly oxidative nuances, particularly in traditional Jura winemaking. Its delicate structure and fresh profile make it a versatile food wine, well suited to charcuterie, poultry, and regional dishes.
