Tannat
Originally from south-west France, Tannat is a robust red grape variety most closely associated with the Madiran appellation. Although it has gained international recognition as Uruguay’s “national grape,” its roots remain firmly planted in French soil. The name “Tannat” reflects the grape’s defining characteristic—its naturally high tannin content.
Tannat produces deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with firm structure and notable ageing potential. In youth, the wines can be powerful and intense, but with time they soften and develop complexity. Aromatically, Tannat often displays notes of dark fruit such as blackberry and plum, alongside secondary characteristics of coffee, spice, cocoa, and sometimes vanilla, particularly when oak-aged. Despite its bold tannins, it can retain good acidity, which helps maintain balance.
Thanks to its structure and intensity, Tannat pairs best with rich, flavourful dishes. It is particularly well suited to red meats such as beef, lamb, and pork, especially when grilled or roasted. The wine also complements dishes with bold seasoning or spice, as its tannins and body can stand up to strong flavours, making it a natural partner for hearty cuisine.
