Terrasses du Larzac
Terrasses du Larzac is a appellation in Languedoc - The relatively new wine region specialises in red wine made with local varieties grown in 32 villages in the hills northwest of Montpellier.
The area’s famous terraced vineyards benefit from a warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by cold air from high altitudes, resulting in the perfect place to ripen balanced wine grapes.
Terrasses du Larzac is part of the new wave of quality-minded regions taking Languedoc to the next level, away from the area’s better-known bulk wines and into fine wine territory.
History of Terrasses du Larzac
Winemakers and grape growers living under the protection of the Causse du Larzac, an impressive limestone plateau, were granted their appellation in 2014. However, the region has a long winemaking history.
The Ancient Romans planted vines in the region over 2000 years ago, and their work was carried on by Benedictine monks during the Middle Ages. For centuries, wines based on the local Carignan wine grape were predominant, resulting in soft, refreshing wines with a medium body. Recently, producers have focused on making richer wines, including varietals, such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, to add weight to the region’s wine.
The Grapes in Terrasses du Larzac
The predominant grapes used to make Terrasses du Larzac wines are Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan. They are complemented by auxiliary grapes, such as Cinsault, Counoise, Lledoner Pelut, Morrastel and Terret Noir.
These are all warm-climate grapes that benefit from Southern France’s dry, well-drained soils, intense sun exposure and rugged terrain. Grapes grown higher inland are tarter and less sweet than those growing below. Therefore, combining different grape varieties from diverse plots results in balanced wines with great complexity. The art of blending was perfected in Languedoc and the neighbouring Rhône Valley, and Terrasse du Larzac wines are an excellent example of the style.
The Terroir in Terrasses du Larzac
Terrasses du Larzac enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate enhanced by the cold from high altitudes of up to 400 meters. The Massif Central, specifically the Larzac plateau protects the area while creating greater contrast between the warm days and cold nights.
Geologically, the area is complex, with red clay, white limestone and heavy clay soils adding variety to the region. The vineyards, as in terraces, benefit from extraordinary sun exposure, while allowing alluvial absorption. Ultimately, the appellation has an ideal terroir to grow premium grapes, especially red varietals. With modern expertise and technology, winemakers are producing the best wine the area has ever made.
Wine Styles in Terrasses du Larzac
Terrasses du Larzac red wines are made with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, along with a few other local varieties. All wines must contain a combination of these primary grapes. The wines contain an alcohol by volume of at least 12%; they are rich, bold and complex on the nose and palate.
Expect red and black fruit aromas, brown spices and earthy undertones. These wines are wonderful ambassadors for the Southern France style and ideal complements for Mediterranean dishes such as lamb, grilled red meat and stews.
