Trousseau
Trousseau is a red grape variety native to the Jura region in eastern France, where it is one of the area’s traditional grapes alongside Poulsard and Savagnin. Although relatively limited in plantings, it plays an important role in Jura’s distinctive wine identity. The grape thrives in the region’s marl and limestone soils and benefits from warmer, well-exposed vineyard sites compared to other local varieties.
In terms of style, Trousseau produces wines that are deeper in colour and more structured than those made from Poulsard. It typically yields medium-bodied wines with firm tannins and bright acidity. Aromatically, Trousseau is known for its expressive profile, often showing red and dark fruit notes such as cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, alongside spicy, earthy, and sometimes slightly wild or gamey characteristics.
Trousseau is usually vinified as a single-varietal wine in the Jura, although it can also be used in blends to add structure and complexity. The wines can vary from fresh and approachable to more concentrated and age-worthy expressions, depending on vineyard conditions and winemaking style. Its balance of fruit, acidity, and savoury character makes it a versatile food wine, pairing well with charcuterie, poultry, game, and regional dishes.
