Marsanne
Predominantly grown in the Northern Rhône Valley, Marsanne is best known for its role in producing wines from appellations such as Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage. In these regions, it is often used to craft rich, full-bodied white wines, either on its own or in blends. Although closely associated with the Rhône, Marsanne has also been planted more widely across southern France, demonstrating its adaptability to different warm-climate conditions.
Marsanne is commonly blended with its more widely recognised partner, Roussanne, which brings aromatic lift and acidity to complement Marsanne’s weight and texture. As a single-varietal wine, Marsanne can be more challenging to produce, as it requires precise vineyard management. It is particularly sensitive to climate: in cooler conditions it may struggle to ripen fully, while in excessive heat it can overripen and lose freshness. When handled well, however, it produces wines with a broad, rounded palate and moderate acidity.
In terms of flavour, Marsanne typically shows notes of ripe orchard fruits such as pear and apple, often accompanied by hints of honey, almond, and subtle spice. With age, the wines can develop more complex nutty and waxy characteristics. In recent years, regions such as the Languedoc have successfully cultivated Marsanne, producing expressive and accessible styles that highlight the grape’s richness while maintaining balance.
