Petit Verdot
Petit Verdot is a red grape variety traditionally associated with Bordeaux, where it plays a minor but important role in classic blends. Although its exact origins are likely in south-west France, it is now most closely linked to the Médoc, where it is used in small proportions—typically around 2–6%—to add colour, structure, and distinctive spicy notes to the wine. Its contribution, though limited in quantity, can significantly enhance the complexity of Bordeaux blends.
The grape is known for its late ripening, which can be problematic in Bordeaux’s relatively cool and variable climate. As a result, many vineyards reduced or removed Petit Verdot plantings during the mid-20th century, particularly in the 1960s, in favour of earlier-ripening varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This shift was driven by the need for more consistent ripening and the growing demand for reliable vintages.
The name “Petit Verdot” translates roughly as “little green one”, referring to its tendency to struggle to ripen fully in cooler conditions. However, in warmer regions of France, such as the Languedoc, the grape can achieve full maturity more easily. When properly ripened, Petit Verdot produces deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with firm tannins and intense aromas of dark fruit, violet, and spice, making it a valuable component in both traditional blends and, increasingly, single-varietal wines in warmer climates.
