Pineau d'Aunis
Pineau d’Aunis is a red grape variety native to the Loire Valley in France, where it has been cultivated since at least the Middle Ages. It is most closely associated with appellations such as Coteaux du Vendômois, Jasnières, and parts of Anjou and Touraine. Historically, it was more widely planted, but its presence declined in favour of more commercially prominent varieties. In recent years, however, it has seen a modest revival, driven by interest in indigenous and lesser-known grapes.
The variety is well suited to the Loire’s cool, temperate climate and is known for its naturally high acidity and relatively light structure. Pineau d’Aunis typically produces pale-coloured, light- to medium-bodied red wines with soft tannins. It is particularly distinctive for its aromatic profile, often showing notes of red berries such as strawberry and raspberry, alongside pronounced peppery and spicy characteristics, which are a hallmark of the grape.
Pineau d’Aunis is used both as a single-varietal wine and in blends, where it can add freshness and aromatic lift. It is also occasionally used in the production of rosé wines. While traditionally associated with simple, early-drinking styles, careful vineyard management and modern winemaking have led to more refined expressions. Today, it is valued for its uniqueness, food-friendly nature, and its role in expressing the character of the Loire Valley’s diverse terroirs.
