The “Garrafeira” is a specialty of Niepoort house. These Ports from a single harvest age for decades, not in wood but in special glass containers "demijons" (7 to 11 litre glass balloons in the form of old apothecaries’ bottles). The demijhon bottles are from the 18th century, and ageing in these special bottles adds a unique character to the Garrafeira Portwine.

Colheitas are dated Tawnies aged in small casks. The minimum age requirement is 7 years, but the tradition at Niepoort is to age several more years before bottling. The wine takes on a Tawny hue.

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour.

It was in 1872 that Joseph Dartigalongue founded Armagnac La Croix de Salles, named after the property he acquired in Salles d'Armagnac, in the heart of Bas-Armagnac. Since then, every year, the eau-de-vie that comes out of the still is housed in oak barrels to produce, after a long aging in their century-old cellars, Armagnacs of great finesse. Armagnac is mostly made with a grape called Ugni Blanc, and is distilled only once and aged in a different wood, therefore more rustic and fuller than Cognac. This particular vintage is from 1983.

Brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish.
