Coteaux du Giennois
Located on the slopes of the upper Loire, just north of the Sancerre region, the Coteaux du Giennois was granted appellation status in 1998. Across the 14 villages and 190 hectares of vineyard surrounding Gien within the appellation, they produce a variety of white, red and rosé wines under its continental climate, which were heavily influenced by earlier construction of numerous abbeys in the region. This, combined with royal interest from King Charles V in 1218, led to an increase in the number of vineyards and improved quality in wine production.
The Coteaux du Giennois is a fairly unknown appellation that has slowly made a name for itself, pioneering the way for organic wines in the Loire wine region.
