Roussanne
Roussanne is a white grape variety originating from the Rhône Valley in France, where it is widely used in both the Northern and Southern Rhône. It is commonly blended with Marsanne, its traditional partner, particularly in appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. The name “Roussanne” derives from the French word roux, referring to the grape’s russet-coloured skin when fully ripe.
Roussanne is valued for its aromatic complexity and structure. It typically produces medium- to full-bodied wines with moderate acidity and a rich texture. The flavour profile often includes notes of pear, apple, and stone fruits, alongside floral hints such as honeysuckle, as well as subtle herbal and nutty nuances. Compared to Marsanne, Roussanne tends to bring more fragrance and freshness to blends, although it can be more challenging to grow due to its susceptibility to disease and variable yields.
In terms of food pairing, Roussanne is a versatile option. Its balance of richness and acidity makes it well suited to dishes such as poached eggs, crab, and smoked fish, as well as poultry, creamy sauces, and lightly spiced cuisine. With age, Roussanne-based wines can develop additional complexity, making them equally appealing alongside more refined and flavourful dishes.
