Merlot
Merlot is the second most widely planted grape variety in the world after Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is the most planted in France.
The grape’s generous palate, soft tannins, and appealing black and blue fruit aromas make it highly approachable and suitable for a wide range of occasions. Merlot also offers notable versatility at the table, which contributes to its popularity in both Old and New World wine regions.
While Merlot can produce excellent single-varietal wines, it is also widely used in blends, where it adds softness and richness. Although some of the world’s most prestigious wines are made from Merlot, it is equally valued for producing youthful, approachable styles. This is a grape that combines accessibility with the potential for great quality.
The History of the Merlot Grape Variety
The first recorded mention of Merlot dates back to 1784, in the notes of a Bordeaux official. Even then, wines from the Right Bank—particularly the Libournais—were already among the most sought-after in Europe. Merlot takes its name from the local blackbird, merle (or merlau in regional dialect), likely a reference to the grape’s deep, dark colour, which is reflected in the richly coloured wines it produces.
Although its precise origins were long uncertain, DNA analysis has shown that Merlot is the offspring of Cabernet Franc and the rare variety Magdeleine Noire des Charentes, making it a half-sibling to Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Carménère. Its prominence across both banks of the Gironde estuary in Bordeaux was reinforced after the severe frost of 1956, when many vineyards were replanted with Merlot due to its adaptability to the region’s varied climate.
Like many grape varieties, Merlot is prone to mutation. One such variation is the pale-skinned Merlot Gris, while Merlot Blanc exists as a separate offspring rather than a direct mutation. Today, Merlot remains the most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and is also successfully cultivated in numerous French appellations, as well as in wine regions around the world.
Wine Regions
Merlot is the most widely planted grape variety in France, with over 116,000 hectares under vine. It is a key component in many Bordeaux blends and shows particular distinction on the Right Bank, especially in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, where it is often blended with Cabernet Franc or made as a dominant, sometimes single-varietal wine. In the Médoc, on the Left Bank, it is typically blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing softness and fruit to the structure of the wines. The finest examples are complex, age-worthy, and highly sought after.
Merlot is also widely planted in southern France, particularly within the Vin de Pays d’Oc IGP, Languedoc-Roussillon, and the Sud-Ouest. In these regions, it is often used to produce more approachable, fruit-forward wines that are intended for earlier consumption.
Internationally, Merlot enjoys a broad presence. It is one of the most planted grapes in California, alongside Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir, and is also widely grown in Washington State. Chile has established a strong reputation for Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties, while the grape is also well represented in Italy, Spain, and Australia.
Few wine-producing countries are without plantings of Merlot. Its global success is built on its consistency, approachability, and versatility. Although it is sometimes overshadowed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot matches it in both quality and prestige, offering its own distinctive character and appeal.
Wine Styles & Tasting Notes
Merlot can produce inexpensive, youthful wines that are approachable and crowd-pleasing. These wines are typically round, with soft tannins that provide structure without astringency. They often display pronounced dark fruit aromas and a juicy, supple mouthfeel.
When sourced from older vines, grown at lower yields, and aged in oak, Merlot can develop significant complexity and ageing potential. These wines are deeper in colour and more structured, often showing black and blue fruit alongside notes of smoke, leather, and chocolate.
When used in blends, Merlot contributes a generous, rounded character, adding fruit, colour, and softness to the wine. It is a key component in many Bordeaux-style blends around the world, where it balances more structured varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
The influence of oak varies depending on the winemaker’s approach. In general, New World producers tend to favour new oak, imparting more pronounced vanilla and spice notes, while French producers often use oak more subtly to preserve balance and expression of terroir.
Food Pairings
Merlot’s moderate, supple tannins make it an excellent partner for leaner cuts of red meat, such as fillet mignon. Younger styles are particularly well suited to grilling and casual dining, thanks to their approachable, fruit-forward character.
More mature, concentrated Merlot can elevate more formal occasions, pairing well with refined dishes and proving its place at the fine-dining table.
While generally too robust for most fish dishes, Merlot is well suited to white meats, including roasted poultry, veal, and pork. Its juicy palate and fruit-driven profile also complement dishes with sweet elements, such as cranberry or plum-based sauces.
