Chateau de Rousset from Haute-Provence in the recently formed AOC of Pierrevert has wines that are very distinct in character. What makes their wines so unique is that they have both Rhone and Provençal qualities; The reds made with Syrah and Grenache have an underlying power of depth as in many Rhone wines, yet they still have a distinct elegant lighter fresh fruit element as noticed in High altitude Provençal wines.
A vast area in south-eastern France, stretching from Arles to Nice and from the Luberon to the Alpes-Maritimes in the foothills of the Alps. Its wines are shaped by the warm Mediterranean climate and the famous 'mistral' wind, which plays an integral part in keeping the vineyards healthy. Provence produces red, white, and rosé, but is above all celebrated for its pale, dry, and elegant rosés, which are in high demand worldwide. The northernmost appellation of Provence, nestled in the foothills of the Alps between the sunny Provençal coast and the arid Rhône Valley, whose characters it uniquely combines. Granted AOC status in 1998, it spans eleven communes in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, where high-altitude vineyards - reaching up to 1,000 metres - allow the grapes to ripen fully while retaining a prestigious, distinctive acidity. The reds and rosés are Rhône-style blends led by Grenache and Syrah, with Carignan and Cinsault in support, while the fresh, mineral whites draw chiefly on Grenache Blanc and Vermentino. Combining the elegance of Provence with the rustic sturdiness of the Rhône, Pierrevert is an increasingly coveted expression of the French Alps.
