Situated in the beautiful South-West of France, Bordeaux is one of the country's largest wine-growing areas, covering over 125,000 hectares. With the Atlantic to the west, its coastal temperatures are moderated by the Gulf Stream, making it an ideal place for vines to thrive. The region produces a staggering 900 million bottles a year, ranging from large quantities of common Vin de Pays to some of the most prestigious and expensive wines in the world.
Known as 'Bordeaux's Gold' and located to the south-east of the region, Sauternes is one of the world's most celebrated sweet-wine appellations. Its wines depend on a rare natural phenomenon: autumn mists rising from the River Ciron encourage a fungus known as 'noble rot' (botrytis cinerea) to form on the grapes, which shrivels them and concentrates their sugars, acids, and flavours. Made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, the result is a lusciously sweet, golden wine with notes of apricot, honey, candied citrus, and marmalade, balanced by fresh acidity. To carry the Sauternes name, the wine must reach a minimum alcohol level and pass a tasting assessment for sweetness.
