Offering a deep ruby red, Beaujolais is more than just a wine; it's an agricultural region that produces as many as 2.3 billion bottles of red wine per year. This French wine is renowned for its fruity taste and robust structure and has been popular since the 19th century. Beaujolais wines are also rich in pigments of carotenoids which give the wines their characteristic dark purple hue. The wine is typically made from the Gamay grape which is one of the darkest of red grapes.
This is the appellation located in the north west of the Beaujolais region, outside of the main Cru villages, which represents 25% of Beaujolais's total production. Created in 1950, this encompasses 39 villages where wines are more complex and full bodied, due to the terroir around the villages being much more hilly, and the soil being sandier and more granite-based. Each of the 39 communes can use the 'villages' title, which indicates the higher quality, providing the wine is made only from grapes grown within their commune.
Located in the Pays des Brouilly, renowned for the quality of its vineyards, two farms have joined forces to present a complete range of Beaujolais wines; Jean-François Pegaz, who became the owner of Domaine Baron de l'Ecluse (previously belonging to his Aunt Chantal), located in Odenas, and Anthelme and Agnès Pegaz, from the Domaine des Gaillards, located in Charentay.
Jean-François, 5th generation, has since 2019, and the retirement of his parents, the pleasure of taking up the torch and thus managing the two farms.
