Cote de Brouilly: Domaine Baron de l'Ecluse Vieilles Vignes

Offering a deep ruby red, Beaujolais is more than just a wine; it's an agricultural region that produces as many as 2.3 billion bottles of red wine per year. This French wine is renowned for its fruity taste and robust structure and has been popular since the 19th century. Beaujolais wines are also rich in pigments of carotenoids which give the wines their characteristic dark purple hue. The wine is typically made from the Gamay grape which is one of the darkest of red grapes.

Located at the heart of the Beaujolais region, Côte de Brouilly sits on the slopes of Mont Brouilly, an extinct volcano, and covers around 300 hectares. Its distinctive blue volcanic rock, known as pierre bleue, gives the wines a notable minerality and structure that sets them apart from the surrounding Brouilly Cru. Made exclusively from Gamay, they show vivid aromas of fresh grapes, iris, and red fruit, with good concentration and ageing potential. The steep, sun-facing slopes ensure excellent ripeness, producing some of the more elegant and refined wines among the ten Crus.
