Region and Appellation Information

Region – Beaujolais

Offering a deep ruby red, Beaujolais is more than just a wine; it's an agricultural region that produces as many as 2.3 billion bottles of red wine per year. This French wine is renowned for its fruity taste and robust structure and has been popular since the 19th century. Beaujolais wines are also rich in pigments of carotenoids which give the wines their characteristic dark purple hue. The wine is typically made from the Gamay grape which is one of the darkest of red grapes.

Appellation – Julienas

The first vineyards to be planted in the Beaujolais region, some say this cru may have come from or was named after Julius Caesar himself! It is located to the north of the region, with 600 hectares of land at varying altitudes, obtaining it's AOC classification in 1938. Juliénas wines are Fleurie-like in youth but are well-built and fleshier, with spicy and berry flavours, and aromas of violet, peach and strawberry.

Domaine Matray

From a winemaking family spanning 5 generations, Lilian Matray, his wife Sandrine and his daughter Célia work the family estate.

The estate buildings are in Juliénas, a charming little Beaujolais village, while the estate’s vines grow on 11 hectares of slopes that are not only in the Juliénas appellation area. The variety of the soils give the very typical, fruity Beaujolais aromas and flavours of each specific appellation.
