Moulin A Vent: Domaine Matray

Offering a deep ruby red, Beaujolais is more than just a wine; it's an agricultural region that produces as many as 2.3 billion bottles of red wine per year. This French wine is renowned for its fruity taste and robust structure and has been popular since the 19th century. Beaujolais wines are also rich in pigments of carotenoids which give the wines their characteristic dark purple hue. The wine is typically made from the Gamay grape which is one of the darkest of red grapes.

Producing the most powerful and well-structured examples in the Beaujolais region, Moulin-à-Vent is known as the 'King of Beaujolais'. Strangely, there is no village bearing the name Moulin-à-Vent; wines from this Cru come from the commune of Romanèche-Thorins, encompassing 330 hectares of land in the east of the region. It is actually named after a local windmill, which was sail-less until a recent renovation. Moulin-à-Vent has an aptitude to age well and develop over the years, virtually turning out like a Burgundy, with aromas of strawberry and raspberry most prominent.
