Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is one of the most prized grape varieties in the world, yet today it ranks only ninth in terms of total vineyard area. Unlike widely planted varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, Pinot Noir is notably difficult to cultivate, requiring specific climatic conditions to thrive, particularly cooler environments.
The grape is responsible for some of the most revered wines in both the Old and New World. However, the finest and most sought-after examples come from Burgundy, where Pinot Noir achieves its greatest expression. These wines are celebrated for their silky texture and delicate, complex bouquet, making them highly prized among collectors and enthusiasts.
Pinot Noir is an ancient variety, likely among the earliest domesticated grapevines. It rose to prominence in France during the Middle Ages, when Cistercian monks carefully cultivated Burgundy’s vineyards under the patronage of the Dukes of Burgundy. This led to the classification of vineyards into what are now known as Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites. Pinot Noir is also one of the few red grapes suited to cooler climates, making it essential in regions such as Champagne and parts of the Loire Valley. Today, cuttings from Burgundy have been propagated worldwide, and while the grape remains demanding, it has found success in select cool-climate regions of the New World.
Like many old varieties, Pinot Noir is prone to mutation, giving rise to related grapes such as Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. It is also the parent of several important varieties, including Chardonnay and Gamay. In France, numerous Pinot Noir clones are officially recognised, reflecting the grape’s long history and genetic diversity.
Wine Regions
Pinot Noir is synonymous with Burgundy, where it shares the spotlight with the equally esteemed Chardonnay. While the world’s most expensive and sought-after examples originate from this French region, Burgundy produces Pinot Noir across a range of quality levels and price points, with consistently high standards.
Appellations such as Pommard, Beaune, and Gevrey-Chambertin are closely associated with fine Pinot Noir, though the grape also plays an important role in Champagne, particularly in Blanc de Noirs styles. Beyond Burgundy, notable expressions can be found in Sancerre in the Loire Valley, while it is also the principal red grape in Alsace. Smaller but noteworthy plantings exist in regions such as Languedoc-Roussillon.
Outside France, Pinot Noir is widely cultivated. In northern Italy, where it is known as Pinot Nero, and in Germany, where it is called Spätburgunder, it produces increasingly high-quality wines. The New World has also embraced the grape, with successful plantings in cooler regions such as coastal California, Oregon, and New York in the United States, as well as in Chile, Argentina’s high-altitude vineyards, and the cooler climates of Australia and New Zealand.
Wine Styles & Tasting Notes
Pinot Noir is known for its pale colour, often appearing translucent in the glass. However, this does not diminish its aromatic complexity, as it typically displays an expressive bouquet with notes of cherry, damp earth, subtle oak spice, and vanilla.
In structure, Pinot Noir generally has low to moderate tannins and relatively high acidity. Its fruit profile varies depending on climate: wines from warmer regions and vintages tend to show riper, more generous fruit, while those from cooler climates exhibit fresher, more tart characteristics.
Although delicate in appearance, Pinot Noir can be remarkably complex and rewarding. Its nuanced profile often exceeds expectations, offering depth and elegance. Despite its modest tannin levels, high-quality examples have excellent ageing potential and can evolve gracefully in the cellar over many years.
Food Pairings
Light Pinot Noir is an excellent pairing for charcuterie, dry-cured meats, pâtés, and terrines. When the wine is riper and more fruit-forward, it pairs particularly well with dishes such as duck, roasted quail, char siu pork, and sweet-and-savoury stir-fries.
Pinot Noir is one of the few red wines that can successfully accompany oily fish, including mackerel, salmon, and tuna. In more concentrated and complex styles, it also complements mushroom-based dishes and roasted white meats. Its affinity with truffles is particularly notable.
From feathered game to Asian-inspired cuisine, Pinot Noir offers one of the broadest food pairing ranges among French wines.
