Gamay
Gamay is a red grape variety primarily associated with France, where it is most famously grown in the Beaujolais region. Here, it accounts for the vast majority of plantings and is the sole grape permitted in Beaujolais AOC wines. It is also found in parts of the Loire Valley and, to a lesser extent, in southern Burgundy, where it often grows alongside Pinot Noir.
Gamay typically produces light- to medium-bodied wines with bright acidity and a pronounced fruit-forward character. Common flavour profiles include red berries such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, often accompanied by floral notes and, in some styles, a distinctive hint of banana or bubblegum resulting from carbonic maceration. While many Gamay wines are intended for early drinking, particularly Beaujolais Nouveau, higher-quality examples from crus such as Morgon or Moulin-à-Vent can develop greater structure and complexity, with the potential to age and, in some cases, resemble lighter styles of Pinot Noir.
The grape is well suited to high yields and is relatively hardy, making it attractive for both volume production and quality-focused viticulture. Its adaptability to granite-rich soils, particularly in Beaujolais, contributes to the expression of distinct terroirs across the region. Today, Gamay remains one of France’s most approachable and versatile red grapes, capable of producing wines that range from simple and refreshing to structured and age-worthy.
