The region of Burgundy, also known as Bourgogne, has a rich and opulent history. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the Grand Duchy of Burgundy reached as far as Belgium and the North Sea, becoming renowned for its riches, culture, and wine. Building on vineyards planted by the Romans and later cultivated by medieval monks, the region established a winemaking legacy that endures today. Despite being geographically small, Burgundy produces some of the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world, its limestone soils lending them a uniquely appetising minerality that sets a Burgundy apart from its peers.
A regional appellation covering every wine-producing area in Burgundy, Cremant de Bourgogne encompasses Chablis in the north to Beaujolais in the south. Though sparkling wine has been made here since the early 1800s, the appellation safeguarding the style wasn't created until 1975. All wines must be produced by the traditional method perfected in Champagne, undergoing a second fermentation in bottle to gain their effervescence. Regular Crémant ages for nine months before disgorging, while the two premium tiers introduced in 2013 - Éminent and Grand Éminent - are aged for a minimum of 24 and 36 months respectively.
From a winemaking family spanning 5 generations, Lilian Matray, his wife Sandrine and his daughter Célia work the family estate.
The estate buildings are in Juliénas, a charming little Beaujolais village, while the estate’s vines grow on 11 hectares of slopes that are not only in the Juliénas appellation area. The variety of the soils give the very typical, fruity Beaujolais aromas and flavours of each specific appellation.
