Region and Appellation Information
Burgundy

Region – Burgundy

The region of Burgundy, also known as Bourgogne, has a rich and opulent history. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the Grand Duchy of Burgundy reached as far as Belgium and the North Sea, becoming renowned for its riches, culture, and wine. Building on vineyards planted by the Romans and later cultivated by medieval monks, the region established a winemaking legacy that endures today. Despite being geographically small, Burgundy produces some of the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world, its limestone soils lending them a uniquely appetising minerality that sets a Burgundy apart from its peers.

Appellation – Aloxe-Corton

Part of the village appellation category of the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy, Aloxe-Corton (pronounced 'Alosse') produces mainly deeply coloured red wines of real personality, with whites being rare. Created in 1938, it lies north of Beaune at 200 to 300 metres above sea level, with excellent sun exposure. It is unusual in being home to two Grands Crus - the red Corton and the white Corton-Charlemagne - alongside its village and Premier Cru wines. The reds are firm and structured, with dark-fruit and spice character and excellent ageing potential, the finest ranking among the most prestigious of the Côte de Beaune.
